The “phase” of sound is very important in live performances and recordings. The combined signal level increases when two signals at the same frequency are added in phase. On the contrary, by adding a normal phase and reverse-phase signals at the same frequency, the signals cancel each other out and the signal level decreases. To avoid the cancellation caused by this physical characteristic, it has become standard to output guitar or bass sound in the same phase as that of the kick drum. But some combinations of effects units or amplifier channels may output signals in a reverse-phase and the signals may unintentionally cancel each other out. Out-of-phase signals are not always a bad thing because it is sometimes purposely used for making sounds, for example using wah-wah pedals, compressors, etc. By determining the phase of a sound and controlling whether it is in or out of phase, your sound making can reach a higher level.

When combined with the ARC-4 Audio Routing Controller, the PHA-1 Phase Analyzer can easily measure whether your current combination of effects units is in phase or out of phase. The ARC-4 has a Phase Invert function that flips the phase and can make an out-of-phase signal in phase and vice versa.

Main Features

●The Phase Analyzer provides the following two types of phase measurements:

Repeated Measurement Mode: Analyzes the test signal that passes through a device and determines whether it is in phase or out of phase. This mode can measure the phase of general analog effects units, devices such as a a phaser, chorus, delay, etc. in which delay elements are used, and devices that can cause a latency in the output due to AD/DA converters or DSPs used in them.

Continuous Measurement Mode: Compares the generated test signal with the same timing length of the subject waveform to analyze their phases.

●When connected to the ARC-4 with the optional RC-7 cable, the level of the signal fed to or output from the ARC-4 can be indicated.

●The display on the unit indicates an incoming signal’s phase. ●Supports 9‒12 VDC external power supply or 9 volt battery.

Optional Accessory KS-EP-1: Bracket to secure PHA-1 to EFS-3 extension footswitch for ARC-4
